Remembering Hiroshima and Nagasaki
90 Seconds to Midnight: No More Nuclear War
Wednesday, August 9th at 6pm
Japanese American Historical Plaza in Waterfront Park
NW Naito Parkway & Couch Street

On Wednesday, August 9th at the Japanese American Historical Plaza in
Downtown Portland, organizations and community members from around the
city will gather to commemorate the 78th anniversary of the atomic
bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States. This year's theme
is 90 Seconds to Midnight: No More Nuclear War, inspired by the Bulletin
of Atomic Scientists. The Plaza is located at NW Naito Parkway and Couch.

On January 23rd, 2023 the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists set the doomsday
clock to 90 seconds to midnight. This is the closest that the world has
ever been to nuclear doomsday. Now more than ever we must organize to
demand the abolition of nuclear weapons.

As the war in Ukraine ravages out of control, the existence of nuclear
weapons remains a threat to all life on our planet. While 90% of the
world’s nuclear weapons remain controlled by the US and Russia, momentum
is growing for a nuclear-free future as the majority of countries in the
world have come together to create the Treaty on the Prohibition of
Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), making nuclear weapons illegal under international
law.

Oregonians must do our part to work for a nuclear-free future! We invite
you to be a part of this year’s memorial event, which will feature the
voices of communities most impacted by nuclear injustice and make clear
the links to movements for racial, environmental, and social justice.

Performers and speakers include keynote speaker Hanako Wakatsuki-Chong,
the new Executive Director of the Japanese American Museum of Oregon
Hanako Wakatsuki-Chong.

You can find the full planned program and event details at
https://www.oregonpsr.org/h_n_memorial_2023.

Event coordinated by Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility. Peace
and Justice Works Iraq Affinity Group is one of the event's cosponsors.
