Our allies at the War Resisters League, which has a strong 
counter-recruitment program aimed and diverting young people who might be 
thinking of joining the military, has but out an alert for this coming 
Monday, April 2. At 6 PM (or 7:55 according to the agenda), the Portland 
Public School Board is considering a resolution to bring the Junior 
Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) to our schools.

Clearly our society is militarized enough without bringing militarism to 
the schools.

Dear Peace & Justice Community:

Please mark your calendars for Tuesday evening, April 2nd.

That is when the Portland School Board will likely hold a first reading of 
a proposal to bring the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) to 
some or all of Portland high schools.  If this proposal is allowed to go 
forward, it would effectively undermine our successes, over the years, at 
dramatically restricting military access to our students and cleaning up 
the behavior of military recruiters at our schools.  Starting up JROTC 
would be a big setback in many ways and would further militarize our 
public high schools.

The meeting starts at 6 pm on April 2nd. at the PPS administrative 
building (501 N Dixon St., Portland).  We will gather outside the main 
entrance at 5:45 pm.  We will have signs, and selected members of our 
community will be signed up to speak to the school board.  It is important 
that we *fill the room*, so please make every effort to attend.
