Greetings PJW supporters
Last week five of us went out in the blazing heat and posted about 250
flyers for the "Zones Project," showing what would happen if a nuclear
blast hit downtown Portland. The posters include an inset promoting this
year's Hiroshima/Nagasaki commemoration, 70 years after the only wartime
atomic blasts, being coordinated by Oregon Physicians for Social
Responsibilty, and cosponsored by PJW among others. The full announcement
for that event, taking place next Thursday, August 6 at 6 PM at the
Japanese American Historical Plaza, is below.
That information and links to the Zones Project page and other related
events can be found at:
http://www.psr.org/chapters/oregon/events/70-years-after-hiroshima.html
PSR is talking about coorindinating another day of postering, but if you
want to just pick up some posters to put up in your neighborhood--
especially if you live north of Lombard, between E 83rd & 145th, between
West 75th and 137th, or in Tigard, Vancouver or Lake Oswego (Zones 5 & 6)
please arrange to come by the PJW office (in inner SE) and grab some
posters! We have a limited number here but can make more; right now
they're not in an accessible space but I can put them out for those who
are willing to make some rounds.
Thanks
dan handelman

Subject: 70 Years After Hiroshima & Nagasaki: The Ever-Present Nuclear
Threat
Oregon PSR and our community partners invite you to join us for the annual
commemoration of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on
Thursday, August 6th, 2015 beginning at 6:00 PM at the Japanese American
Historical Plaza at Waterfront Park in downtown Portland.
The year's memorial event, which marks the 70th anniversary of the
bombings, is titled 70 Years After Hiroshima & Nagasaki: The Ever-Present
Nuclear Threat. We will use this momentous anniversary both to acknowledge
and remember the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and as an opportunity
to educate participants about the current dangers of nuclear weapons. We
will discuss the movement to abolish these expensive, dangerous and
inherently immoral weapons and provide opportunities for YOU to take
action to ensure that nuclear weapons are never used again.
We are asking for your financial support to produce and to promote these
memorial and educational events. Your generous donation will help us to
inform and engage new activists in Oregon PSR's work for a nuclear-free
world.
We've got an exciting line-up this year, including speakers with direct
experience of nuclear weapons, including the perspective of Marshall
Islanders whose lands were ravaged by years of nuclear weapons testing.
Along with emcee Polo Catalani, the event will feature performances by
Portland Taiko, Tomodachi Chorus, and Sahomi Tachibana's traditional
Japanese dance group.
We are also sponsoring and organizing a number of related events,
including Poets Respond to the Nuclear Age 70 Years After Hiroshima and
Nagasaki, a poetry event at Concordia University on August 1st featuring
Oregon Poet Laureate Peter Sears, Kathleen Flenniken, Leah Stenson and
others, and The Zones Project, an interactive walk and bike ride (on July
19th and again on August 1st) that seeks to bring a sense of the scope of
destruction and death at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Visit our website or
contact us at 503-274-2720 or info at oregonpsr.org for more information.
We look forward to seeing you on August 6th.
In peace and health,
Kelly Campbell, Executive Director
