[pjw] UPDATES/ACTIONS: Iran (not) war, Guantanamo, Iraq 17 Years Later

Hi again

So, for now, the Iranians appear to have lobbed missiles at two US bases
in Iraq, but having telegraphed that intent there were no casualties. Iran
declared victory in its retaliation and Trump declared victory in his
aggression. He announced that he plans to add more sanctions (even though
you can't get blood from a stone, that is to say, not much left to
sanction...) but isn't for now listening to the Fox news pundits (and
others) urging war.

HOWEVER, it is good that the below two actions are still underway, and
there may be more organized actions later this month:

1-- daily protests at Terry Schrunk hosted by Veterans For Peace

2-- protest Thursday (tomorrow) at 5 PM on the Hawthorne bridge in
solidarity with actions called by Moveon.org, Indivisible, National
Iranian American Council, Win Without War and About Face (Veterans Against
The War) (there are other area protests on Thursday as well, follow the
link for more info)

MEANWHILE, a Ukranian commercial flight carrying Iranians, Canadians and
people from about 1/2 dozen other countries crashed in Iran yesterday, but
it appears to have been from engine failure. It is extremely strange
timing considering the two countries under scrutiny (I mean Ukraine and
Iran, not Canada), but it sounds more like a Boeing problem than an act of
violence of any kind.

I will also remind folks that we are co-hosting this Friday's PPRC rally,
starting early (at 4:30 PM) to mark 17 years since Guantanamo opened.
While we will address the situation in Iran, to respect our cosponsors
from Amnesty International the theme is still "18 Years and 8
Convictions: Time to Shut Guantanamo."

And, finally, in our PJW UPDATE and the subsequent email I put out the
wrong date for the March event which will mark 17 years since the invasion
of Iraq-- it will be Friday March 20 (not the 15th, which was a Friday in
2019). Sorry for the confusion. More info soon on that.

No War With Iran: Day of Action

*We will not be forced into another war. On Thursday, January 9, at 5 p.m.
local time, the anti-war majority in this country will get visible to
oppose Trump's war and say #NoWarWithIran.*

*A core principle shared by supporting organizations is a commitment to
nonviolent and peaceful actions. All actions that are sponsored or
organized on this page are intended to be nonviolent and peaceful. We
expect all participants to*

No Iran War - Hawthorne Bridge Protest
*WHEN:*

*WHERE*
Hawthorne bridge
Portland, OR 97204

*Signups:*
112 attendees

Join Stand On Every Corner PDX and Indivisible Oregon to protest the
escalation of conflict with Iran and call for #NoWarWithIran. We know Trump
is impulsive, reckless, and above all self-interested, and he appears
willing start a war with Iran as a distraction from impeachment. We cannot
and will not let this happen. We will hold signs on the NORTH side of the
Hawthorne bridge from 5-6 pm. We will meet near the center of the bridge,
so folks are welcome to come from either the East or the West depending on
what works for them. Please bring signs and flashlights or other small
lights. This event will be peaceful and nonviolent.
